At FreshTrack, we’re committed to enhancing efficiency, transparency, and traceability across the fresh produce supply chain. That’s why we’ve transitioned to the globally recognised GS1 Digital Link standard, ensuring seamless data sharing and compliance with the future of product identification.
A Look Back: Our Journey with QR Code Technology
Back in 2014, we introduced proprietary QR Code URLs with embedded serial numbers, allowing our production scanning systems to generate traceability data. These QR Codes could be scanned by anyone with a smartphone to access batch, traceability, and product information via a public webpage.
What is GS1 Digital Link?
In 2018, GS1 introduced the Digital Link standard, which will become mandatory in 2027 for all products sold at checkout, replacing traditional 1D barcodes. These new digital barcodes:
- Are readable by point-of-sale scanners, warehouse systems, and smartphones.
- Must contain a GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) but can also include over 500 additional data points—such as serial numbers, batch details, and best-before dates.
- Enable real-time access to product data for all supply chain stakeholders, from growers and packers to buyers and retailers
Why FreshTrack Has Made the Switch
By adopting GS1 Digital Links, we’re ensuring that our partners stay ahead of industry changes while benefiting from:
- Enhanced Traceability – Real-time access to product origin, quality, and movement across the supply chain.
- Improved Compliance – Alignment with global industry and regulatory standards.
- Increased Efficiency – A single barcode for all scanning needs, reducing redundancy and manual data entry.
- Greater Transparency – Instant access to verified product information for buyers, retailers, and consumers.
What This Means for FreshTrack Users
If you’re a grower or packer, integrating GS1 Digital Links simplifies data sharing and ensures your produce meets global retail standards. For buyers it means instant, reliable product insights—empowering better decision-making and quality assurance.
